Travel & Recommendations

We are thrilled to celebrate our wedding with you in the beautiful city of Cape Town! We recommend booking your accommodation as early as possible since March is peak season. For your convenience, we would prefer if our guests stay in Clifton Beach or along the Atlantic Seaboard, as we will be organizing transport for the wedding events. Below are some accommodation recommendations:

We will arrange a shuttle for guests to and from our wedding and the welcome events. When you RSVP, please let us know if you would like to make use of the shuttle service.

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 30 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre. Direct flights to Cape Town are available from select U.S. and European cities. Alternatively, you can fly into Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport, JNB) and take a 2-hour connecting flight to Cape Town.

We highly recommend that you stay anywhere along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. Please use the linked website as a guide to the areas which comprise of the Atlantic Seaboard.

Visas

Please have a look to find out whether you need a visa to enter South Africa. Your local South African Embassy should know more:

Vaccinations

No special vaccinations are currently required for travel to South Africa. Cape Town is malaria-free, so no special precautions are necessary. Additionally, there is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa. However, if you’re arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, proof of vaccination may be required. For a list of applicable countries, visit:

Weather in Cape Town

Weather is always unpredictable. The month of March in Cape Town is generally dry, warm and sunny during the day (mid-20s) and chilly at night (temperature can drop to the early teens). We recommend you bring something warm for the evenings.

SA Currency

The currency in South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange rate is approximately 20 Rand to 1 U.S. Dollar.

Suggested experiences and places to visit in the Cape:

Table Mountain

This iconic landmark is a must-see, not just because it towers over the city, but because on a clear day, the views are endless. It’s an extremely popular attraction, so be prepared for some waiting. Booking online in advance can help reduce wait times.

Lion’s Head

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, consider hiking Lion’s Head. The round trip takes about 3 hours, so bring water as there’s no shade, and it can get hot. The breathtaking views from the top, where you can see the city and Table Mountain in one frame, make the effort worthwhile.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, nestled on the slopes of Table Mountain. It’s one of the most acclaimed botanical gardens in the world and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t miss “The Boomslang,” an impressive aerial walkway with unique design features.

Robben Island

Famous for being the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment, Robben Island is a significant historical site. Tours start at the V&A Waterfront and need to be pre-booked online. The tour takes about 3.5 hours and is dependent on ocean conditions due to the ferry crossing.

Wine Farms

Franschhoek is the ideal spot for wine lovers, offering fine dining and numerous wine farms where you can enjoy walk-in tastings. Consider hiring a private guide to explore more wineries without worrying about driving. Stellenbosch is another area worth exploring for wine tasting.

Cape Town’s Coastline

Cape Town boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and coastal drives. While the beaches may be busy this time of year, the lively atmosphere is part of the experience. For a quieter visit, head out early in the morning. All these locations are accessible by rental car, or you can include them in an organized guided tour. Alternatively, take taxis or use Uber to avoid parking or driving hassles.

Clifton 1,2,3rd Beach
Llandudno Beach
Noordhoek Beach

Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek & Kalk Bay

If you have rented a car, or if you would like to go on an organized tour, we recommend a drive over to Simon’s Town. Situated on the slightly warmer side of the mountain, this coastline has a number of interesting stops.

Boulders Beach

This charming beach is home to a thriving penguin colony. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit the penguins or explore the small towns along this stretch of coastline. Simon’s Town also has a small naval base and several fishing harbors. The drive from Simon’s Town to Kalk Bay is scenic, and you can enjoy lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants.

Cape Peninsula

A traditional Cape Peninsular tour would include many of the beaches and towns already mentioned. We suggest getting down to Cape Point.

If you have a full day to explore you can consider the following with either your own rental or with a tour guide:

– Leave Cape Town City

– Drive past Camps Bay, Llandudno & Hout Bay

– Drive over Chapman’s Peak to Noordhoek

– Cape Point National Park

– Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town

– Kalk Bay & Muizenberg then back to Cape Town via Constantia winelands.

Safari near Cape Town

Aquila Safari

For the best safari experience we highly recommend traveling to the Kruger National Park, however, we know this may not be feasible due to timing/budget. Therefore, your best option for those seeking your first safari experience is Aquila Safari.

Located just two hours from Cape Town and set in the pristine Southern Karoo against a backdrop of Mountains, Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an exciting taste of Africa. It is home to a variety of animals, including the Big 5 – offering safaris in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback.
